The articles, based on his visit to Europe in 1951, were compiled, edited, and introduced by the writer Badr Al-Abri.

Hussein Haidar Darwish, the Omani intellectual who chose from an early stage of his life a path of travel and movement between Baghdad, Pakistan, the Gulf states, and several Arab countries, decided in 1951 to observe Europe closely after six years had passed since the Second World War (1939–1945). He journeyed there as a reflective writer, beginning in England, then moving through Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, and Switzerland. Through these travels, he published his experiences and reflections—marked by self-criticism and a broad humanistic outlook—in the magazine Sawt al-Bahrain. These writings appeared from the magazine’s third year, issues (1) and (2), in Muharram and Safar 1372 AH / 1952 CE, until its fourth year, issue (1), in Muharram 1373 AH / 1953 CE.

Earlier, however, in the magazine’s second year, issue (12), published in Muharram 1371 AH / 1951 CE, Darwish had already presented his open and critical reformist vision of Arab reality in comparison with what he described at the time as the “factors behind the progress of European peoples.” The editors of the collection also added another article by the author related to the book’s theme, entitled “The Political Situation in Western Europe,” originally published in the Iraqi newspaper Al-Ahali, issue no. 83, on 24 Dhu al-Hijjah 1371 AH / 14 September 1952.

Darwish began his European visit in England, where he witnessed the death of King George VI of Great Britain and Ireland in 1952, as well as the preparations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. His journey continued until he reached Switzerland, recording throughout his observations, reflections, and critiques.

Al-Abri compiled these articles according to the arrangement originally intended by the author, while also editing and proofreading them. He further provided an introductory study on the author’s life, his early role in Karachi, Pakistan, the emergence of the Omani Union, as well as his intellectual vision and scholarly contributions.

The book will be among the 2026 publications of the Omani Society for Writers and Literati and will be available through the society and its distributors.

13 may 2026.
